Poverty Exists In Washington,DC 2010

Drum Out Poverty day will be a celebration of the human spirit. The heart is the fundamental drum of life. That rhythm connects and binds us all. Poverty is an insult to the human spirit. The drum reminds us all of our humanity.

MicroVenture Support, Inc., is a not-for-profit corporation. It is our intention to reduce poverty here in DC by focusing on job creation through the small business sector. With an employment rate exceeding 18% in many of our neighborhoods and communities, poverty is a real fact of life here in the Capital of the largest economy in the world. Many people have given up trying to find a job – because there are NO JOBS to find. Rather than train people for non existent jobs, we intend to create jobs by placing poor people in small business with growth and job creating potential. The small business is the economic engine of the economy. We plan to provide opportunity and hope at the bottom of the socio economic pyramid.

The Drum Circle

Alternate TextMahatma Gandhi said, “…poverty is the worst possible form of violence.”

Drum Out Poverty Day has three goals. First, to create an awareness of the ravages of poverty right here in Washington, DC – our community. Second, we want to provide a venue and focus for organizations like us that address economic privation to share strategies and engage with our friends and neighbors in the community. And, third, to raise funds for this effort.

The Celebration

On Saturday, June 12th, at 1:00PM, we will raise the voices of our drums to announce a celebration of the human spirit. There will be presentations of different drumming traditions, such as Afro-Cuban and others. There will be story telling for the children in The Children’s Pavilion. There will be dancing and demonstrations by local drum and dance groups. It will be a day to learn what resources our community provides to support our families, friends, and neighbors.
